On Thursday 20th August at 18:42 hrs the Team were contacted by Cumbria police to a report of Persons possibly in trouble in an Inflatable on Ullswater near Aira Force. Cumbria Fire And Rescue and North West Ambulance were also called and attended.

Patterdale Team launched their Rescue Rib and searched the area but no one was identified as being in trouble so the incident was stood down shortly after. 5 Mountain Rescue Volunteers were involved for around 1 hour.

On Saturday 25th July 2026, at 14:00hrs, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service requested the assistance of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team via Cumbria Police to help rescue a woman who had got into difficulty on Ullswater Lake near Watermillock. The Team’s RIB, Patrick Pete Hamilton, was quickly deployed to the water and headed to the scene, whilst a Team Land Rover followed by road to the Outward Bound Watermillock jetty.

Thankfully, the woman was helped by boats at the scene, including a Lake District National Park Authority boat and returned safely to shore, so the Team was stood down. The incident involved 7 Team Members and lasted an hour. The Team would like to thank Outward Bound for allowing us access to their premises.

On Wednesday 23rd July just before 22:00hrs the Team were tasked by Cumbria Police to a report of a Boat that had been witnessed sinking near to St Patricks Boat hire at Glenridding. A multi agency response was initiated between Cumbria Police , Coastguard Helicopter,their land teams as well as Patterdale Mountain Rescue. The Team launched their Rescue Rib “Patrick Pete” into the area where the boat had been moored and could see the sunken boat on the sonar confirming the exact position. Whilst a search was being made of the area the owners were identified and could confirm that no one had been on the boat at the time and therefore no one missing or injured.  The incident lasted for around 2 hours and involved 4 Team members.

On Monday 01/07/2025 at around 3pm the team were called out regards an elderly walker who was dehydrated and exhausted. The walker had been walking from Howtown back to Patterdale along the lakeshore path. The distance combined with the heat of the day had taken it's toll and he became exhausted and unable to continue. He had contacted his wife who was staying locally in their hotel and she raised the alarm. Whilst the leader was on the phone to the casualty a couple stopped to help, they gave the casualty some water and assisted with establishing their exact location via phonefind technology. A small team of four responded and two members took the rescue boat Patrick Pete across whilst the other two took a team land rover with kit towards the casualties location. The casualty was assessed at scene and then taken to the rescue boat and he was then taken across the lake to Glenridding, after which he was reunited with his wife.

On 21/06/2025 at 14:00 hrs the team were alerted to 2 paddle boarders in trouble on Ullswater. Fire and Rescue had been contacted by someone on the lake who had seen 2 paddle boarders blown off course to the east side of Ullswater. The team leader contacted a team member who was working on the LDNPA ranger boat that weekend. The LDNPA boat then went to check the location whilst 2 further team members got PMRT Patrick Pete boat ready to respond. The LDNPA boat located the paddle boarders and assisted them to get back to the west side of the shore where they were parked. The 2 boarders had been struggling with the wind since 11am that day and were very grateful for the help. In the meantime a number of fire engines and a land ambulance had also responded. Following the update the team leader then stood all other services down.

On Monday 17th May at 19.00hrs Cumbria Police alerted the Team to assist with a sailing yacht which had run aground on Ullswater on the west side of the lake.  Belfast Coastguard had received the call for help in the first instance and requested the teams Rescue Rib to attend. Once on scene the Yacht was re-floated and towed back to its mooring at Howtown sailing school.  Due to the very dry spell of weather this last month or so the Lake has dropped dramatically and this had caused the vessel to run aground in what would normally be deep water.
The Rescue lasted a couple of hours.

At  13:29 on Monday 31st March Patterdale MRT were contacted by North West Ambulance Service with a report of an 76 year old man who had tumbled about 8 meters from the Ullswater lake shore path. Eleven Patterdale MRT responded, launching the Team's rescue boat and making their way to the scene beneath Hallin Fell.  The casualty was assessed by one of the Team's Doctors and Great North Air Ambulance personnel who had made their way on foot from Howtown.  He was packaged in a full body splint and then stretchered onto the waiting boat.  The casualty was transported across the Lake to Outward Bound Ullswater to be transferred to a land ambulance and taken to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
The Team would like to thank the Outward Bound Trust for use of its landing stage and the Ullswater Steamers for facilitating access to the Team boat and transporting a Team member.
The incident lasted 3.5 hours and involved 11 team members.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were called at 09:42 on Friday 21st March by Cumbria Police who had received a report of a man entering the water to swim at Falling Rocks on Ullswater, but had not been seen to resurface.  The Team launched its rigid inflatable boat and joined colleagues from the Northwest Ambulance Service, the Fire Service, a Coastguard helicopter, the Great North Air Ambulance and landbased Coastguard personnel in searching the foreshore and lake as far as possible from the surface.  The man's companions were taken back to the Team Rescue Centre and supported by the Police.   After several hours nothing had been found and the rescue was scaled back.  The Team RIB stayed at the scene and conducted a sonar search of the area, identifying possible targets for the Police Dive Team, who arrived at about 13:00.
The Team's thoughts are with the friends and family of the man involved.
The incident lasted 3.5 hours and involved 16 Team members.

Cumbria Police contacted the Team with a request to assist a male who had struck a rock some 40 metres from shore while sailing on Ullswater. The Team responded with their Rescue RIB Patrick Pete. They found the 14ft cruiser sitting on a reef.

The cruiser was towed off the reef and checked for damage/leaks. The sailor was escorted back to his mooring at Pooley Bridge.

Cumbria Police requested the Team’s assistance with a group of males who were in the lake near Pooley Bridge. The group, who had been drinking, had launched a boat from a campsite and were reported to have got into difficulty. The Team were put on standby until it was established that the group had been recovered from the water.

Due to the nature of the incident, a multi-agency response had been initiated, involving the Team, police, Fire and Rescue and HM Coastguard.
