At 18:00 on Sunday 16 August 2026, the Team were tasked by Police regarding an injured walker on Helvellyn. A member of a group of four had sustained an ankle injury whilst descending the mountain. Eleven Team members were deployed to Red Tarn in overcast conditions with showers. Team medics assessed and began to treat the casualty on scene, before they were stretchered off the fell and transported to Patterdale base. From there, the casualty was able to make their own way to hospital. The operation lasted four hours and thirty minutes, with the Team standing down at 22:30. Deputy Team Leader Matthew Nielsen noted that the group had come well prepared, carrying appropriate waterproofs, heat packs and an emergency blanket. This equipment made a practical difference whilst the Team made its way to the party on the fell. It is a timely reminder that even in August, conditions on the higher fells can deteriorate quickly, and carrying the right kit could prove as important for your group as it did for this one. We wish the casualty a swift recovery.

Sunday 09/08/26 Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were alerted by Cumbria Police to rescue a casualty stranded on Pinnacle Ridge with a severely dislocated kneecap.The incident was reported via a 999 call at 12:07 PM. A group of hillwalkers, who had parked their vehicles at Patterdale, were scrambling up the technical route of Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag when one member of the party slipped, sustaining the painful leg injury. The casualty was part of a group of four. Thankfully, their companion was a qualified Mountaineering Instructor who provided immediate first aid and deployed a portable storm shelter to keep everyone warm. The Rescue Operation: Location: Pinnacle Ridge, St Sunday Crag. Response: Full team callout. Ten team members quickly deployed with rigging equipment and medical gear. Air Support: Due to the steep technical terrain, the Coastguard tasked a rescue helicopter to assist with a winch evacuation. The Coastguard helicopter deployed from Carlisle airport and they managed to drop their paramedic at the casualty site very quickly. Their paramedic administered first aid and the casualty was then winched up into the helicopter and evacuated to the Patterdale Mountain Rescue base where he was transferred to a land ambulance.A huge thank you to the Coastguard for their quick response and great team work. We wish the casualty a very speedy recovery!

At 19:30 on Wednesday 29th July, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team (PMRT) received notification from Cumbria Police of a male who had slipped at the summit of Hallin Fell and injured his ankle. PMRT volunteers made their way around Ullswater lake, and then ascended Hallin Fell on foot from St Peter’s Church. The casualty was examined by Remote Rescue Medical Technicians, his injured ankle splinted, and he was stretchered down to the road for transfer to North West Ambulance Service. The rescue lasted 3 hours and involved 9 Team members. The Team wishes the casualty a speedy recovery.

At 18:42, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by Cumbria Police to a student on a residential course who had sustained an ankle injury near Grisedale Tarn. Initial contact was made with the informant, who described the casualty’s injury and the treatment already applied on scene. A full Team callout was initiated, and five Team members departed promptly in a team vehicle up the Grisedale Valley. Approximately one hour after the initial alert, the Team received an update stating that the casualty was now able to bear weight on the injured ankle and had requested that the Team stand down. All Team members returned to the rescue Base to re-pack and prepare equipment for future incidents. The incident took 2 hours and involved 8 Team members.

On Saturday 18th July at 14:40, North West Ambulance Service called out Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team volunteers to assist with a male who had fallen on Swirral Edge, Helvellyn, injuring his head. A full team callout was initiated due to the severity of the injury and its location high on the mountain. Fortunately, Team members were fundraising on Helvellyn summit and were quick to scene and able to assist the casualty to the summit of Helvellyn where the Great North Air Ambulance Service helicopter had landed. GNAAS transported the casualty back to Patterdale Base, where once re-assessed by our RRMTs, the casualty was handed to NWAS for travel to hospital. The Team wishes to thank Great North Air Ambulance Service for their assistance.

Team members were despatched to the scene, she was administered strong analgesia and her ankle was splinted by the RRMTs and then carried in a stretcher to a waiting Ambulance. 7 Team Members attended the Rescue which took 2 hours to complete.

North West Ambulance Service contacted Patterdale Mountain Rescue requesting assistance with a report of a walker who had fallen and broken their ankle. The walker was on the undulating fell paths around the Aira Force waterfalls making it impossible for the ambulance service to access them. Luckily, the Team were already at base and were immediately diverted to assist. The casualty was located after an initial search through the numerous paths. The Team medics assessed the casualty and provided treatment before packaging them in a stretcher. Once in the stretcher it was a short uphill path to the nearby land rover allowing onward transportation. The rescue lasted 2.5 hours and involved 11 Mountain Rescue volunteers.

At just before 18:00 hrs on Monday, 6th July, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team (PMRT) was alerted by the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) to an incident near Norman Crag, north of Aira Force. The casualty had sustained injuries after a fall and reported that they could not move. The PMRT Duty Leader was able to speak directly with the casualty to assess the situation. Because of the injuries described on the call, a helicopter transport was promptly requested to ensure the individual could be moved as comfortably and quickly as possible. Thirteen highly trained volunteer team members deployed to the scene. Upon locating the casualty, two team Remote Rescue Medical Technicians (RRMTs) and a team doctor provided immediate assessment and care. After being given pain relief, the casualty was safely packaged into a protective vacuum mattress and stretcher. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter from Caernarfon arrived to assist with the evacuation. Team members carried the stretcher to a suitable landing site, and the casualty was flown to Preston Hospital for further assessment and treatment. The operation lasted 3 hours. We are grateful to the Coastguard team from Caernarfon – Rescue 336 for the assistance and hope the casualty makes a speedy recovery.

On Saturday 4th July the Team received their second rescue of the day when a male had been walking on Gowbarrow near Hind Crag when he slipped and was unable to carry on. A full call out was initiated and the Team made their way to Aira Force to ascend to the casualty site. The male was treated at scene by Team RRMT’s, packaged in a stretcher and carried off the hill with a leg injury. Once back at the car park he was handed over to North West Ambulance for onward journey to hospital for further treatment.

On Saturday 4th July at 14:50hrs the Team received another request for assistance from Cumbria Police just as they were setting off to deal with job 51. The Duty Leader established what the incident was and as Patterdale were already committed a request to Penrith Mountain Rescue was placed for them to deal with the rescue. Penrith Team responded and treated the male for an Ankle injury , stretchered him off the hill which again was on Gowbarrow and he was transferred to hospital for further treatment.
