On Saturday 12 September, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were asked to assist a man near the summit of Place Fell who had become unable to continue walking because of severe muscle cramps. Fortunately, with the help of kind passers-by, he was able to make slow progress down while seven volunteer team members climbed to meet the party at Boredale Hause.

The Team then took over and helped him down to the valley.

On Saturday 5th September at 17:20 hrs the Team were contacted by North West Ambulance to assist with a male who had fallen off a swing on the lake shore at Side Farm Campsite, Patterdale and had sustained a head injury. The Duty Leader attempted to contact the informant to get more information but was unable to speak to them, with this in mind a full Team call out was initiated.

The first Landrover attended the scene and as there was a Paramedic already on scene dealing no further assistance was required and the Team were stood down.

On Saturday 4th July at 09:45 hrs the Team were tasked by Cumbria Constabulary to reports of a male who was suffering the effects of the weather and was cold and wet. The male had camped overnight on Helvellyn with friends and on attempting to walk back down to the roadside had become wet and cold and unable to carry on.

The team were called out and started making their way up Greenside to Kepple Cove in Land Rovers where they met the male who had managed to walk down with assistance from passers by. The male was conveyed to Patterdale Base given warm drinks and food and then was allowed to meet up with his friends to return home.

On Saturday 30th May at 15.45hrs the Team were contacted by North West Ambulance after they had received an Apple Phone emergency activation. Reports were vague on location and on speaking direct to Apple it was established that the male was on the path heading from Red Tarn to Glenridding .

Team members were already at Base due to an open day so were quickly mobilised to the casualty site. Reports initially stated that the male was dehydrated , exhausted and unable to walk and had a head injury therefore a Coastguard Helicopter was requested for a swift evacuation. Once on scene it was established that the casualty wasn’t as bad as first feared so the Coastguard was stood down immediately, the casualty was treated and stretchered off the hill to Greenside.

He was examined by the Team Doctor and allowed to carry on with his vacation staying at the Helvellyn YHA.

At 6am on 26-05-26 Cumbria Police contacted Patterdale Mountain Rescue requesting their assistance due to reports of two campers who had been vomiting and were concerned that they may not make it off the fell. Following initial contact by the Duty Leader it was agreed that they would begin to descend, while mountain rescue monitored their progress.

Two team members met them at the fell bottom and took them back to the base in order to be initially assessed before continuing on to hospital for further assessment.

At 13:30 on Sunday, 10th May, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by Cumbria Police to an older walker experiencing chest pains and breathlessness near Grisedale Tarn. ​Communication with the casualty was lost shortly after the initial 999 call, prompting an urgent response.

4 team members deployed to the fell, while the rest of the team assembled at base. The Coastguard helicopter was requested to assist due to the severity of the medical report. The Coastguard helicopter arrived quickly on scene, located the walker, and provided an initial assessment. The casualty was then airlifted to Carlisle Airport and transferred to a North West Ambulance Service vehicle for transport to Carlisle Infirmary.

On Tuesday 28th April at 21:05 hrs just as the Team were packing up from job 33 they were alerted by Keswick MR of a job at Red Tarn, Glenridding. A lone camper was feeling unwell and had been vomiting for a considerable time and requested help to get down to the valley bottom.

The Team were mobilised and once at the casualty she was assessed and slowly walked off the hill without the need of a stretcher evacuation. A bed was found for the night at the local YHA and the team returned to base to pack the kit for the second time that night.

On 18/0426 at 1813 Patterdale Mountain Rescue were contacted with reports of a male on Gowbarrow experiencing a medical episode. He had tried to walk off himself but was so unwell that he wasn’t able to walk. The Team were deployed the short distance from the car park to assess the gentleman on what was a beautiful warm evening.

Following treatment by the Team’s medics the gentleman was stretchered off the hill to a waiting ambulance for ongoing assessment.

Whilst a group of friends ascended Helvellyn from Glenridding one of the group suffered debilatating cramp to their legs. Despite hydrating and eating, the casualty felt unable to proceed. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Duty Leader made contact with the casualty and accesed their condition. Thankfully the group took the advice to assist their friend to begin walking, despite the initial discomfort to get the muscles working again. Their progress was remotley monitored by the Duty Leader until they were safely back at Glenridding.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were requested to assist a camper who had set up camp in the rockycrags of Angle Tarn Pikes. Unfortunatly as the higher winds and rain took hold, the campers tent was beginning to collapse. This in conjunction with the exposed location raised their anxiety. Communication was difficult initially due to the area having almost no phone signal. Once the casualty managed to get back in touch the team ascended and quickly located the casualty.The team assisted them to decamp before they were walked back down and transported to their car.
The team have had a number of callouts recently for people experiencing solo camping for the first time. If you are new to the solitude of the fell tops overnight, pleaseensure your equipment is suitable for the weather forecast. In addition while you are gaining experience please consider staying near a known path to allow you to safely retreat should you decide its time to leave , when the environment transforms into a night of rain and strong winds.
The callout lasted four hours, involving four team members.
