PATTERDALE MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM — INCIDENT REPORT Callout 84/2026 — Swirral Edge, Helvellyn — 16 September At 13:35 on Wednesday 16 September 2026, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were tasked to respond to a casualty on Swirral Edge, Helvellyn, following a report of a severe knee injury.
. The casualty had been reported by a passing member of the public. As the Team were deploying, two mountain guides independently came across the casualty and remained with them until Team members arrived; thankfully one of those guides was a member of Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, who privided inital casualty.
HM Coastguard were called and attended with a helicopter, however low cloud and drizzle over the area prevented them from getting in to assist with an evacuation. As a result, the casualty had to be stretchered down the face of Swirral Edge into the Helvellyn basin, and then carried on to a point where they could be met by an ambulance.
Given the terrain and the demands of the carry, Penrith Mountain Rescue Team also attended to assist with the extraction. The casualty was transferred to the care of the ambulance service and taken to hospital. Eleven Team members were deployed during the operation. A Team spokesperson commented: "This incident goes to show that even a small trip can have big consequences in inhospitable locations." The Team would like to thank HM Coastguard, Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, and Penrith Mountain Rescue Team for their greatly appreciated assistance in bringing the casualty safely off the hill in difficult conditions.
Thanks are also due to the mountain guides and the member of the public whose prompt report initiated the response. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and thank you for the casualty view photograph. The Team were stood down at 19:00, making this an operation of 5 hours 25 minutes
