What we do

Search & rescue,
on a moment’s notice.

Injured walkers, missing people, searches through the night — when the pager sounds, the team turns out, trained and equipped, at no cost to anyone we help.

We receive no government funding. Every rope, radio and Land Rover is bought with money the public gives us.

On the fells

Rescue in every season.

From Helvellyn and Striding Edge to Place Fell and the Dodds, the team covers some of the most serious mountain terrain in England — in summer heat, winter ice and everything between.

Every callout is answered by trained volunteers with mountain, medical and technical rescue skills, at no cost to anyone we help.

On the water

Ullswater, covered.

Our rescue boat, The Pete Hamilton, lets the team respond to incidents on and around Ullswater — from paddleboarders in difficulty to searches along the lakeshore.

Water rescue is a growing part of what we do, and every crew member trains for it alongside their fell-rescue skills.

In an emergency

How a rescue happens

999 → Police → Mountain Rescue

If someone is hurt or lost on the fells, call 999, ask for the Police, then ask for Mountain Rescue. The team is paged and volunteers respond from home and work, day or night.

Recent incidents

The team

Ordinary people.
Extraordinary hours.

Farmers, nurses, teachers and joiners who drop everything when the pager sounds — giving thousands of unpaid hours a year, and asking for nothing back.

Who we are

Volunteers, every one of us.

Around 40 volunteers make up the team — trained in mountain rescue, casualty care, rope rescue, water rescue and search techniques, and on call every hour of every day.

Nobody is paid. Members give thousands of unpaid hours a year to training, callouts and fundraising, and ask for nothing back.
