A dog was reported lost having run off over rough ground at Angle Tarn, the Team was put on standby in case the dog was found in a difficult position on steep ground. Fortunately, the dog was found by passers by and reunited with her owner. The incident involved 1 Team member and lasted 30 minutes.

On 19/06/2025 at 20:05hrs the team were called out regards a walker who got stuck coming down from Arthur’s Pike. The walker had tried to descend down a sheep trod. When the vague path ended in a rocky steep area, he called for assistance. The team leader spoke to the walker on the phone and a small team was called out to get him off safely. As the team responded the walker called back and stated he was ok and managed to scramble back up to safety and was no longer in need of assistance. The team was stood down.

On Saturday 1st March the team went to the aid of two local sheep who had decided their grazing was much nicer in a precarious part of Harrison Crag in the Grisedale Valley.  The farmer had asked us for assistance to rescue the sheep as they had been in the same place for a few weeks and were unable to exit the same way they had descended. One team member had already been to recce the scene and decided it was a full rope rescue which would be carried out from the top of the crag abseiling down to the sheep.  Once the rope systems were set up using belays etc, two willing volunteers descended down the crag and, after a short amount of sheep whispering, they managed to catch the first culprit. This sheep was then lowered down to the bottom where it was released safely to immediately start eating fresh grass. The second one was now looking very sheepish and succumbed to being caught and lowered down very quickly.  The two rescued sheep wandered off along the hillside without so much as a backward glance or thank you to their rescuers. The team are always available to carry out these type of rescues , it gives us valuable training experience. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local farms whose land we access and use for training  and rescues. 8 Team members volunteered for the extra training and had an enjoyable few hours in the sunshine.

Following reports of a stray dog on the Helvellyn range, Cumbria Police contacted the Team. The Duty Leader spoke with the informant and quickly established that the dog probably belonged to the local hunt who had been seen trail hunting in the area.

The informant was thanked for his concerns and reporting these to the police.

The informant was concerned for the welfare of the owner of a dog that he had heard barking. A local farmer was contacted who advised that the local kennels had been exercising their trail hounds in the area. As this presented an opportunity for our newly qualified drone pilot to practice using the Team’s drone, a small team was sent up the track and spent 2 hours searching the area.

Once we were sure no people or domestic animals were in the area, the Team was stood down.

On Friday the 10/12/21 some members of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were out training when a local farmer got in touch with regard to a sheep which was stuck in the Greenside mine area. As well as being an excellent training opportunity the team are always keen to support the local farmers.

The nonplussed sheep was stuck on a ledge above one of the old Greenside Mine spoil heaps. A rope system was set up and a team member was lowered to encourage the sheep back to safety. The sheep very gratefully ran off in search of it’s flock. The rescue involved 6 team members and lasted for about 1 hr.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was made aware of a sheep stuck in the ravine in Greenside Beck by the farmer who requested the Team’s assistance to get it out safely. A Deputy team leader who lives locally went and assessed the location and decided it required a full rope rescue to get to the sheep.

15 team members who were attending the Sunday practice then went and carried out a technical rope rescue to the sheep. It was successfully caught and helped back out onto the safety of the fell from where it had scrambled down into the precarious position it was located. The sheep was grateful for the assistance and rushed off to eat grass not even hanging around for any photo opportunities!!

This was a good practice session for the team, who are always happy to assist the local farmers with such situations as a thank you for using their land for practices and driving tracks and farm land to get to rescues.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted at about 15:00 on the 13th August by a local farmer who reported that one of his sheep was stuck behind a tree on Thornhow Crag, a local climbing area mainly used by local activity centres. Two team members, who happened to be at the Team’s Base at the time, went to assist.

They lowered the farmer to the sheep and then hoisted the pair of them back to the top of the crag. The incident involved two team members and lasted about two hours.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted by a local farmer to request assistance with some sheep which were crag-fast on a ledge on Cat Crag by Angle Tarn. There were 8 sheep on the ledge and they had been there at least a week in the hot weather without access to water.

3 team members went up the fell with climbing gear and managed to get all 8 sheep down safely. All 8 sheep would like to thank the team for freeing them from their tricky situation.
