Duration

Location

Hayeswater

On the evening of Tuesday, 27 October 2026, the Team were tasked regarding two walkers reported as tired and lost in the Hayeswater area. Team members were deployed to locate the pair, who were found and guided safely off the hill. Both casualties walked out unaided.

The rescue operation concluded without further incident. As the nights draw in and the days shorten through autumn, conditions on the fells can change quickly, and routes that are straightforward in summer can feel very different by late October. If you are heading out onto the hills, plan your route, carry a torch, and check the weather.

Knowing how to use a map and compass — and having them with you — remains one of the most reliable ways to avoid a situation like this one.
