The Team was called by Cumbria Police to reports of a female who had slipped whilst walking by Aira Force and suffered an ankle injury. The casualty was given pain relief and her ankle splinted. She was then stretchered to the car park where she was handed over to NWAS and conveyed to CIC for further treatment.

The Team was tasked to assist a male walker who had slipped whilst descending and suspected he had broken his leg A Team Doctor was first on scene and established that it wasn’t as serious as first thought. The casualty was treated, placed on a stretcher and sledged down to a Team Land Rover.

He was conveyed to Penrith Hospital for further treatment.

The Team was called to assist a family of three that had been descending the fell when one in the party slipped on the saturated ground and went over on her ankle. The casualty reported hearing a crack and was unable to weight bear. The ankle was stabilised with a splint and the casualty was then stretchered down the steep grassy slope towards Hartsop and a Team Land Rover.

She was reunited with her family who took her to hospital for further treatment.

Later in the afternoon the Team received a second call-out. A walker had slipped and dislocated her shoulder while descending Steel Knotts to St.Peter’s church, Martindale. The casualty was assessed by a Team Doctor, given strong pain relief, placed on a stretcher, lowered down the fell, then transported to Pooley Bridge in a Team vehicle.

NWAS took the casualty to CIC for further treatment.

The Team was called to go to the assistance of a teacher who had injured her ankle while leading a group of school children, with the support of outdoor instructors. After the ankle was splinted, the casualty was carried on a stretcher into Martindale, from where she was taken to hospital for further treatment.

NWAS requested the Team’s assistance following a report of an 11 year old girl who had injured her ankle in the grounds of a local outdoor education centre. The Duty Leader contacted the centre and established that centre staff had carried the girl the short distance back to the centre.

The Team was stood down after it was confirmed that the child was safe.

The Team was simultaneously tasked by both the NWAS and Cumbria Police to attend a 58 year old woman from Yorkshire who had slipped whilst walking with her husband in Fusedale. Unable to obtain a mobile signal, the gentleman had descended to the farm at the head of the valley to call the police; meanwhile another party had come across the casualty and managed to contact the Ambulance Service.

A Team Doctor assessed the woman’s ankle, and administered pain relief before applying a splint. The woman was stretchered from the fell to a waiting Team Land Rover and transported to Pooley Bridge where she was handed over to an NWAS crew.

NWAS tasked the Team to attend an incident above Scalehow Force, on the south side of Ullswater. A 32 year old female had slipped and injured her lower leg, she was unable to continue her walk. Once on scene, the Team assessed the casualty’s injuries and splinted the leg.

The casualty was carried to Sandwick from where an ambulance took her to hospital for further treatment.

At 11.30hrs on Saturday 30th December Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called by Cumbria Police to a report that a man had fallen and sustained an Arm Injury. The Duty Leader made contact with the informant, established the nature of the incident and location as Kailpot Crag under Hallin Fell and called the Team out to attend.

Team members made their way to Sandwick then on foot to the scene. The Team’s Rescue Rib travelled along Ullswater to swiftly get to the location as it was right next to the lake shore. On arrival medical assistance was given including strong pain relief and after examination by the Team Doctor a Helicopter was requested.

This was to enable a swift evacuation to hospital due to the nature of the arm Injury and potential long term damage. The casualty was treated and packaged onto the Teams stretcher then loaded onto the Rib where he was conveyed around to Sandwick Bay. After some remarkable flying by the Coastguard in the strong winds and heavy rain they managed to land in a field next to the lake.

The casualty was loaded into the aircraft and flown off to Hospital in Carlisle. 13 Team Members attended the rescue which took 4.5 hours to complete. We wish the casualty a swift recovery and thanks to Coastguard Rescue 199 for their assistance.

On Saturday 25th November at 14.29hrs Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted by Cumbria Police to assist a young woman who had slipped whilst walking near the High Dodd/Sleet Fell area in Boredale. The Duty Leader initiated a full call out and team members made their way around Lake Ullswater and into the Boredale valley from where they made their way on foot to the casualty site.

The woman had slipped whilst descending on the path and had heard a loud crack from her ankle, making it too painful to walk on. After treatment and pain relief her ankle was splinted and she was sledged down to the valley bottom on the stretcher. The lady was then conveyed by the team’s Land Rover to Penrith where she was then taken to Carlisle Hospital by her parents for further treatment.

Eleven team members responded to the rescue which took 4.5 hrs.
