On Wednesday 22nd November 2023 at 13.41hrs Cumbria Police contacted the Duty Leader at Patterdale MRT to assist a woman who had slipped and could not walk any further. Contact was made with the casualty site near How End at Deepdale on the descent from Hartsop Above How.

It was established that the lady had been walking with friends when she had slipped on a wet grassy slope and heard a pop from her ankle and could not weight bear at all. The team was called by the Duty Leader and members made their way from Patterdale Base to the scene. On arrival the lady was in a survival tent and in considerable pain.

The ankle was examined and strong pain relief was given to ease her discomfort. Her ankle was splinted and she was placed onto a stretcher and carried off the hill to the Team Landrover from where she was driven to Patterdale base. Onward travel to hospital was with her colleagues for further treatment. Eleven team members attended the rescue which took 2 hours in total.

The team wish the lady a swift recovery for her injury.

On Sunday 15th October at 12:35hrs Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was tasked by North West Ambulance Service to a report of a male who had slipped whilst walking at Aira Force. The Duty Leader spoke to the man and established what had happened and then called the team out to assist with the rescue.

On arrival at the scene an examination was carried out on the casualty, as he was in great pain. He was given strong pain relief and his ankle was splinted. He was then placed on a stretcher and carried from the falls to the team vehicle parked nearby. The man was then conveyed to his own vehicle where his partner was then able to drive him to hospital for further treatment.

11 Team members responded to the incident which took just over 2.5 hours.

On Saturday October 1st 12:37 the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was tasked by Cumbria Police to attend an incident on Swirral Edge, Helvellyn. A young man in his 20’s had fallen from the Edge and severely injured his leg. 19 members of the team responded and with the assistance of a Coast Guard helicopter from Wales, the young man was evacuated from the fell for further treatment at hospital.

This incident involved 19 members of the team and took a total of 5hrs 30 minutes

On Monday 18th September at 15.23hrs whilst the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was at the funeral of Team Member Chris Lewis the Team was contacted by Cumbria Constabulary regarding a report of a woman who had fallen at the High Cascades in Aira Force, sustaining a knee injury and requiring assistance.

Penrith Mountain Rescue were kindly on standby for us whilst the Team was away and they responded quickly to the scene. The woman was treated and carried out to the roadside where she was able to attend hospital for further treatment in her companions vehicle. We would like to wish her a speedy recovery and our thanks to Penrith MRT for providing cover on this day.

On Sunday 3rd September at 11:48hrs Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was tasked by Cumbria Police to attend a man with a head injury on the footpath near Sheffield Pike. Further information was gathered by the Duty Leader and as a result a full call out was initiated alongside a request for The Great North Air Ambulance.

As the team were making their way to the scene on foot it was established that the elderly man had actually fallen around 100ft from the footpath, down the hillside, sustaining a nasty head injury. A Coastguard Search And Rescue helicopter was requested with winching capabilities to assist. The man was treated for his injuries and once the coastguard helicopter was at the scene the he was winched onboard and flown to hospital for further treatment.

The team wish the gentleman a swift recovery from his injuries and thank GNAAS and R199 from Prestwick for their valuable assistance on this rescue. 10 team members attended the incident which lasted just under 4 hours.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called at 07:00 on Saturday 12/08/2023 by the police, who had received a report of a woman camping near Grisedale Tarn who had developed severe abdominal pain and was unable to make her way down off the fell.

Team members responded to the callout and made their way up the Grizedale valley in driving rain and gusty winds to the tarn, where they found the woman, her partner and son in two semi-collapsed tents. Another collapsed tent beside the tarn had been abandonned by its occupants, who had apparently retreated earlier. The woman was assessed and treated by a team doctor, before being stretchered down the valley with the rest of her party to the waiting team vehicles.

They were all then driven back to the Team Rescue Centre where they were reassessed. The rescue involved 11 team members and lasted 5 hours.

At 15:25hrs on Wednesday 26th July the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were called by North West Ambulance to assist a woman who had slipped whilst walking on Keldas near Glenridding with her partner. The team responded and treated the lady for an ankle injury , she was given pain relief and her ankle was placed in a splint.

She was then carried off the hill by stretcher. Once down at the village she was handed over to North West Ambulance Service and conveyed to hospital for further treatment. The team wishes the lady a speedy recovery from her injury. 10 team members were involved in the rescue which took just over two hours to complete.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted at 14:45 on Sunday 18th June after a woman taking part in an organised charity fundraising event slipped while descending from Gowbarrow. The lady suffered an injury to her lower leg which was treated at the scene by paramedics employed by the event organisers.

Team members responded and stretchered the woman down to Aira Force car park where she was transferred back to the event organisers for onward transport to hospital in Carlisle. The rescue lasted for 2 hours and involved 10 team members.

On Saturday 10/06/23 at around 1700, the team were just finishing a call out in the Grisedale Valley when a second call came in for Boredale House area. A female walker had gone over on her ankle as she was descending from Boredale Hause into Patterdale.

The casualty was with friends who called 999 to request Mountain Rescue. The casualty was quickly located and her injured ankle was treated by the team doctor. The casualty was then taken down towards Beckstones Farm on a stretcher to a team Land Rover. 15 team members responded to this incident and the rescue lasted 2.5 hours.

On Saturday 10/06/23 at around 13:15 the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out regarding a woman who had injured her ankle. The injured walker had walked over Helvellyn and then down to Grisedale Tarn. At the tarn she slipped and injured her ankle and was unable to continue.

Kind passers-by looked after her and called 999 to request Mountain Rescue. The team went up and treated her ankle at the scene. She was then stretched down the Grisedale valley to a team land rover. As team members were on their way back to the base another call out came in for the Boredale House area. 12 team members attended this call out took 4 hours
