At approximately 13:20 on Saturday 20th September, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted by Cumbria Police following reports of a fell runner who had sustained a lower leg injury while descending from Kirkstone Pass.

After speaking directly with the casualty, the team was deployed to the scene. On arrival, the runner was assessed by a team medic, administered pain relief, and her injured leg was splinted. She was then stretchered to a team vehicle and transported to the base, where she was swiftly transferred to an ambulance and taken to hospital for further treatment.

The casualty, who was well prepared for her day, had been assisted prior to the team’s arrival by two members of the public, who helped keep her warm and provided a hot drink—an act of kindness that made a significant difference during the wait.

Patterdale MRT would like to thank the members of the public who supported the casualty and remind all fell runners and walkers of the importance of carrying appropriate equipment, including warm layers and a means of communication, especially as autumn conditions begin to set in.

On Thursday 18th September at 12:49hrs the Team were contacted by Cumbria Police to reports of a male who had slipped and was stuck in a Gulley and had received a head injury. The Duty Leader who was at base doing some admin took the call and attempted to contact the informant to get an exact location, after numerous attempts with no success two Team Members travelled to the area of the What Three Words location to try and locate the casualty. The rest of the team were requested to start travelling to Aira Force car park where eventually the casualty was located around a 10 minute walk leading up to the falls. The male was treated at scene for a laceration to his head and carried down to the car park by stretcher where he was handed over to North West Ambulance for onward travel to Hospital for further treatment. The male had been walking with his partner when he slipped off the narrow path falling around 3 meters into the gulley and sustained the injury to his head.
10 Team members attended the incident which took 2 hours to complete.

Report of a 68 year old gentleman requiring assistance on Great Mell fell. The report was recieved by Patterdale Mountain Rescue via Cumbria Police at 1800 on 11 September 2025.
The gentleman had braved the heavy showers through the day to walk with his sister to the summit of Great Mell. Unfortunatly whilst descending through the steep, sodden ground the man slipped. Thankfully he wasnt injured however  due to his lack of mobility he was unable to continue safely.
An initial hasty party ascended the fell to provide the casualty with a shelter. The remaining team then arrived with the stretcher. Following a medical assesment and a few sweets for energy, the casualty was stretchered down the hill side. Patterdale wishes to thank the local farmer for allowing us to take a shortcut across his land, which provided the casualty a much smoother experience.

The callout lasted 2 hours with 10 team members.

On Sunday 7th September at 12:35hrs Cumbria Police alerted the Team to a Runner who had fallen whilst descending from Helvellyn into Greenside.  The Duty Leader made contact with the informant and established the runner was in a race and had simply tripped over whilst descending the start of the Zig Zags down into Greenside, the male had received multiple facial injuries and was now in a shelter with another competitor. The Team were mobilised and made their way to Kepple Cove Dam in the Land Rovers then on foot to the casualty site.  Once on scene the male was treated for his injuries and packaged into a stretcher where he was carried off the hill down to the Landrovers.  He was conveyed back to Patterdale Base and then taken to hospital by his colleagues for further treatment.
15 Team members were involved in the rescue which took 3 hours to compete.

Whilst dealing with rescue number 71 some of the Team were heading up Grisedale with potential new team members for a walk around the Edges when they came across a couple who were doing the Coast to Coast.The female had slipped and received an injury to her ankle which was too painful to walk on. They treated her for her injury and conveyed them both down to Patterdale Base where she was then taken to hospital by North West Ambulance for further treatment.
This was a busy day for the Team with it being the third job of the day after receiving the first call from Cumbria Police at 8am that morning.

On Sunday 24th August at 17:42hrs Patterdale Mountain Rescue were contacted by Cumbria Police to a report of a Female walker who was near Red Tarn and had injured her ankle.  On speaking to the casualty it was established she was with her family and had slipped whilst crossing the stream at Red Tarn and could only walk slowly due to the pain she was experiencing.
The Team were mobilised and headed on foot to the casualty from Greenside, the female was then treated for the injury,her ankle was suitably splinted , pain relief given and she was stretchered off the hill down to the Team Land Rovers. The party were then conveyed down to Glenridding where they had left their vehicle and proceeded to hospital for further treatment.
10 Team Members attended the rescue which took just over two hours to complete.

On Saturday 23rd August at 16:55hrs the team were tasked by Cumbria Police to a walker who had fallen  around 100m from Swirral Edge down towards Red Tarn. The Duty Leader called the team out and requested a Coastguard Helicopter to assist with the rescue due to the location and nature of the incident. Shortly after two mobiles with 10 members set off from Patterdale Base to head to the scene on foot.The Great North Air Ambulance also responded from Teeside but were unable to get to the casualty site and landed on Helvellyn Summit.  Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 912 from Humberside was on scene 30 minutes from the request for assistance and winched their paramedic down to the casualty. They then landed at Patterdale where they lifted the Team Doctor and Team Leader also winching them down to the casualty site to assist with treating the injured person .
The male was treated for serious trauma, given strong pain relief and then packaged in a vacuum mattress and placed on a stretcher and winched into the Rescue Helicopter where he was flown to the Major Trauma Hospital at Preston for further treatment.
The male had been walking with his son when he had tripped whilst descending Swirral Edge and unfortunately tumbled around 100m in total down rocky steep terrain before coming to a stop on the headwall above Red Tarn.
The Team would like to thank both Coastguard Rescue 912 for their swift assistance and also the members of the public who went to help the injured walker , they wish him a swift recovery and hope he is back on the fells as soon as possible.
19 Team members were involved in the Rescue which took 5 hours to complete.

On Saturday 9th August 2025 at 15:35hrs Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by Cumbria Police to assist a walker who had sustained a lower leg injury while descending from the Red Tarn area. The injured individual was being supported off the fell by companions who had contacted emergency services for help.
Due to limited availability of Patterdale team members, Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was also requested to provide additional support.
Team members met the casualty and his group at Greenside, where he had been successfully assisted down from the fell by his friends. The injured leg was treated and splinted on scene by team medics. The casualty was then transported to hospital for further treatment by a member of his party.

On Sunday 20/07/25 at 1322hrs, the team were called out to a walker who had slipped and injured her ankle. The walker had been walking with her partner and their baby in the Grisedale Valley when the incident happened. The team responded and located the casualty quickly. The injury was stabilised at scene and she was then transferred to a team mobile and taken back to the base. The casualty and partner then made their own way to hospital for further treatment. the rescue lasted 2.5 hrs and involved 11 team members

On Monday 7th July at 15:00hrs the Team were tasked by Cumbria Police to a report of an elderly male who had fallen in the Grisedale valley and unable to continue his walk, he was described as suffering with head and back injuries due to the nature of his fall. On arrival at the casualty it was established that he had in actual fact fallen near to Grisedale Tarn and had slowly walked down the valley until he succumbed to the pain and could walk no further. The male was assessed and given pain relief , he was then packaged in a vacuum mattress and placed onto a stretcher. Due to the nature of his injuries a request was made for assistance from the Great North Air Ambulance to fly the casualty to hospital , unfortunately due to conditions they managed to drop the Hems Doctor at scene but then had to land in the valley bottom and after consultation was decided he wouldn’t be flown in the aircraft. The casualty was carried off the hill down to the Team Land Rovers and then conveyed to Patterdale Base where he was handed over to the North West Ambulance Service for onward travel to hospital.  12 Team Members were involved in the incident taking 4 hours to complete.
