On Friday 17 April 2026 at 1518 Patterdale Mountain Rescue recieved a request to assist a gentlemen who had sustained a suspected broken ankle whilst walking the Coast to Coast path between Grisdale tarn and Patterdale. Grisedale is notorious black hole for all forms of modern communication. Thankfully the gentleman’s friend managed to make their way down the valley to pass the request for help to a passing walker who in turn got a lift from a local farmer who assisted getting the message down to the valley bottom where the call to 999 could finally be raised. The Team deployed and drove as far as possible up the valley. The gentleman was assessed and treated by the Team medics before being transported to the Team base to meet with the ambulance. for onward treatment. A great example that rescues are a team effort requiring friends, walkers, farmers, mountain rescue and the ambulance service. Thank you to all involved.

Once off Striding Edge they were happy they were safe and continued on with their walk back down to Glenridding thanking us for the assistance, all be it remotely it was enough for her to gain the confidence to retrace her steps.

On Monday 6th April at 09:55hrs the Team were contacted by Cumbria Police to assist a female who had been walking with her brother and had aggravated an old injury and was unable to carry on with her walk. Contact was made with the casualty and established they were descending from Dollywaggon Pike towards Grisedale Tarn. The team were called out by the Duty Leader and made their way to Patterdale Base. As it was Easter Monday and our annual fundraiser the Duck Race was taking place in the afternoon a request was made to Penrith MRT to assist with the rescue so that some of Patterdale’s members could stay behind to make sure the ducks were ready and on the start line for their big race. Patterdale members ascended on foot from the Grisedale valley bottom up to Grisedale Tarn and then up the path towards Dollywaggon where they found the casualty had managed to shuffle down to meet them. She was treated at the scene for a knee injury and given suitable pain relief, her leg was splinted and then she was stretchered off the hill. Penrith team members arrived at the Tarn and assisted with the evacuation down to the Land Rovers , from here they were driven down to their vehicle to enable them to attend hospital for further treatment. The rescue managed to conclude in time for the rest of the Team to attend the duck race and cheer on the winning ducks in the glorious sunshine amidst a large crowd of onlookers. This is the second rescue of the weekend we have asked for Penrith MRT assistance for which we are very grateful to receive.

On Saturday 4th April at 21:11hrs whilst Storm Dave was at its worst, Cumbria Police contacted the Team with a report of 4 teenagers who had intended to camp in the Priest Hole but were now needing assistance. The Duty Leader put the Team on standby and attempted to contact the group of males, after numerous attempts contact was eventually made. It was quickly established the group had failed to reach the Priest Hole and had succumbed to the wild and wet weather which Storm Dave was throwing at them and were now cold ,wet and fearing for their lives as they didn’t have a tent to protect them. A full call out was initiated and Team Members made their way to Patterdale base along the lake road where trees were blown over and lots of debris from the high winds was making driving conditions dangerous. Penrith MRT were also requested to assist due to the nature of the rescue and location. On reaching the group, one of the casualties was suffering from mild hypothermia. He was treated at scene , given medication and warmed up before slowly walking off the hill to the Team’s Land Rovers parked in the Hartsop Valley bottom. Once back at Patterdale Base they were given hot drinks and warm dry clothing. Suitable advice was given on how lucky they were to be rescued in the conditions without serious injuries received. The Team would like to remind the Public that the Priest Hole is hard to find in the dark and can have serious consequences if you fail to find the route up the rock face especially in wet and wild conditions. Patterdale MRT would also like to remind everyone to check the weather forecasts for the area intended and avoid exposed locations in predicted storms. Numerous Teams were out during the storm for stricken wild campers, putting everyone’s lives in danger unnecessarily.

The rescue took 6 hours to complete involving 12 Patterdale members and 11 Penrith members who we would like to thank for their assistance.

Whilst Patterdale Mountain Rescue were preparing to depart to a rescue on Birks fell a second call was received via Cumbria Police requesting assistance for a couple walking above Grisedale Tarn towards the summit at Dollywaggon Pike. The weather in the morning had been clear and dry however it was now freezing cold driven rain and the couple were becoming cold and disorientated in the cloud. After an initial conversation with the Duty Leader there location was established and it was agreed that they would follow the path to the Tarn which was now visible before heading down towards Grisedale. This allowed the casualties to keep warm whilst walking along a single path to ensure they didn’t get lost. Simultaneously two team members were deployed to walk up the valley to ensure they were safe and to assist them back to the Patterdale MR base. Once at the base they were given chance to thaw out before arranging a lift back to their car.
