Callout 92
At 04:45 on Friday, 23 October 2026, the Team were tasked by Cumbria Police following a call from two teenagers wild camping on Place Fell.
Their tent had collapsed in strong, gusty winds and heavy persistent rain, and they felt unable to descend safely in the dark and in those conditions. The Duty Leader made contact with the two campers and established that, although their tent had failed, they remained inside it — dry and sheltered from the worst of the weather.
Given that the pair were in no immediate danger, a decision was made to keep them in situ rather than mount a full deployment into difficult overnight conditions. The Duty Leader monitored the situation, maintaining contact until daylight allowed the two to make their own way down the hill via a route advised to them. They walked out unaided and reached the village safely.
The Team stood down at 08:50, having been on standby for 4 hours 5 minutes. One Team member was involved, contributing 4 volunteer hours to the operation. This incident is a timely reminder — particularly with named storms forecast over the coming days — that conditions in the Lake District fells can deteriorate rapidly and without much warning.
The Team would urge anyone planning to walk or camp in the hills to check the mountain weather forecast before setting off, and to be prepared to turn back or revise plans if conditions change. The summit will still be there another day. Carry a torch and spare batteries even in summer: being caught out by darkness is one of the most common reasons the Team are called out.
Keep your phone charged and carry a power bank — a dead phone means no way to call for help and no reliable means for us to locate you. Carry a map and compass and know how to use them; a phone alone is not a substitute for navigation skills. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team is an independent charity and entirely volunteer-run.
