Cumbria Police requested the Team’s assistance with a group of males who were in the lake near Pooley Bridge. The group, who had been drinking, had launched a boat from a campsite and were reported to have got into difficulty. The Team were put on standby until it was established that the group had been recovered from the water.

Due to the nature of the incident, a multi-agency response had been initiated, involving the Team, police, Fire and Rescue and HM Coastguard.

Cumbria Police alerted the Team to a second incident at Glencoyne Bay. Two boys in an inflatable boat had been blown from the shelter of the bay. The Team initiated a response but had barely launched their rescue boat when they were stood down.

The boys had been assisted from the water by a paddleboarder.

In windy conditions, two paddleboarders were blown out of Glencoyne Bay and were unable to return to the shore. The police initiated a multi-agency response by the Team; the Fire and Rescue Service, NWAS and the Coastguard. The Team launched RIB Patrick Pete, but the two paddleboarders were quickly located by Steamer Lady Dorothy, taken onboard and transferred to Glenridding pier where they were assessed and discharged by an NWAS crew.

The Team was tasked by Cumbria Police to a male canoeist who had capsized and was unable to get back onboard. The Team launched their Rescue RIB but the gentleman had managed to get to shore near Silver Point. Due to the wind and choppy waters, he was unable to paddle back to the campsite at Side Farm so he, and his canoe, were taken onboard the RIB back to calmer water near the camp site.

The Team were alerted by Cumbria Police to reports of a kayaker shouting for help. The Team launched their rescue boat and proceeded towards the scene. However, before their arrival the casualty was recovered from the water by a helicopter, from HM Coast Guard, that was in the area responding to an earlier incident.

NWAS requested the assistance of the Team go to the aid of a young child who had fallen into one of the pools at Aira Force. The child was extracted and reunited with his parents before the Team mobilised

On Monday 23rd October at 06:00 hrs Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was requested by Cumbria Police to provide SRTs (Swift Water Rescue Technicians) to assist with a search for a male who had gone into the river at Warwick Bridge near Carlisle.

Team members travelled to the scene where they were tasked for various searches to try and locate the male. After extensive searches they were stood down from the scene and returned back to Patterdale. 3 team members were involved for around 6 hours in total.

At 08:00 on Monday 23rd October Cumbria Police requested assistance from Patterdale MRT to search for a swimmer who had not returned to the shore after his regular morning swim with a group. The team was called and launched the Rescue Rib onto the lake to go and locate the man.

Reports from the scene at the lakeshore at Glencoyne were relayed to the Leader that possible shouting had been heard from the middle of the lake, possibly at Norfolk Island. Two team members were already in the Rib and headed straight for the island. Visibility was poor due to low cloud and they could only see about 25 metres around them.

On reaching the island they located the man who was out of the water, safe but cold. He was brought onto the boat, warmed up and returned to the shore to be checked over by North West Ambulance personnel. The man had done his usual swim and become disorientated due to the low visibility and could not find his way back to the shore.

Fortunately as he was swimming he had seen the trees on the island in the mist and managed to get to safety. He was suitably clothed for swimming wearing his wetsuit, he had a tow float and had done everything correct with the advice given to cold open water swimmers. He waited for assistance without trying to swim back to shore.

Alongside Patterdale, other emergency services were in attendance, Cumbria Fire and Rescue, North West Ambulance Service, Coastguard and other agencies. 12 Team Members were involved in the rescue taking just over 2 hours in total.

On Sunday 07/08/22 at around 1300hrs the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out regarding a missing paddle-boarder on Ullswater, last seen in the middle of the lake on the South side. The incident was a multi agency response and the team worked together with the Police, Coastguard, Cumbria Fire and Rescue, NWAS, LDNPA and Maryport inshore rescue, to try and locate the man.

The search involved numerous rescue boats and shore based swift water rescue technicians as well as a coastguard helicopter. Unfortunately the missing paddle-boarder was not located and the initial rescue search phase was stood down at around 1700hrs. This incident involved 21 Patterdale Team members. Police are coordinating further ongoing search efforts.
