Keswick MRT passed details of a party of two young people reporting themselves at the top of Swirral Edge and unable to descend. Unfortunately, the Team was unable to contact the pair so a party of 3 Team Members were sent to assist. The parent of one of those involved advised the police that they had intermittent live tracking data for their daughter’s phone and that they were near Helvellyn summit.

The couple had ignored the police request made during the original 999 call, for them to stay where they were. The rescue party was diverted to traverse Striding Edge. In the absence of further tracking data it seemed increasingly likely that the couple had descended into Nethermost Cove. Further Team Members were tasked with ascending into Nethermost Cove from Grisedale, while the first rescue party descended into the Cove from Striding Edge.

Contact was made with the pair at 21:50 hours. The couple was escorted to the Team vehicles before being driven back to the Rescue Centre.

On Monday 23rd Oct at 12:30hrs the Patterdale MRT responded to their fourth rescue in the space of 18 hours. North West Ambulance had received a report that a man had slipped off a ledge at Aira Force and was hanging onto a branch. The Duty leader again called the team out to respond and members make their way to the scene to assist in the rescue.

Fortunately, whilst contact was made with the informant it was established that members of the public had managed to help bring the man to safety and he was now on safe ground away from the ravine and deep water. The man was checked over at the scene and as he was not injured he carried on with his walk a little shaken up from his escapade.

The team would like to remind the Public that due to the recent rain the ground and rocks are very slippy, especially in areas heavily used, and to keep away from the edges of ravines and deep water. 11 Team members attended the incident lasting for a total of 1 hour.

At 21:55 on Saturday 12/08/2023 Cumbria Police called Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team for the second time that day. A report had been received of a party of two people who had set off from Patterdale for Angle Tarn to camp, but were lost and now stuck and unable to move on the fell side above the track between Patterdale and Hartsop.

Thanks to a good mobile phone signal the team was able to accurately locate the couple, but were unable to persuade them to move. Five team members ascended the fell and guided the pair down the steep ground, over boulders and bracken, to the Team vehicles below. The rescue involved 5 team members and lasted for 4 hours.

On Friday, July 16th at 18:00 the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was tasked to attend a young, solo female walker who’d become crag-fast in steep and broken ground above Dove Crag. Seven team members were tasked to make their way to the scene, backed up by a further eight team members from the Penrith Team.

Because of the casualty’s precarious position and an underlaying medical condition, the assistance of a coastguard helicopter was requested to help with extrication. In total this incident involved seven team members from Patterdale and a further eight team members from Penrith for a total of 3hrs 30 minutes.

On Sunday 02/04/23 at around 1430hrs Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team received their second call-out on this sunny day. This call-out involved a family of four who had become stuck in rough ground by the side of Angle Tarn Beck. They had attempted to scramble up the side of the beck to get to Angle Tarn but had veered off course and got trapped on steep rough ground.

A small team attended the scene and located the family quickly. With the use of some safety ropes they were all escorted down the fell back to safe ground.

On Sunday 02/04/23 the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted with regard to a walker who had become trapped on the western side of Place Fell. The walker had attempted to scramble up the cliff-face and had become stuck. The location was not far from Side Farm and the first land rover arrived at the scene around 30 minutes later.

The walker was quickly located and secured with a harness. He was then secured with a rope and assisted down the rough terrain to the main path.

On 30 November 2021 at 14:30 the Team was called by Cumbria Police regarding three people stuck on Striding Edge. The walkers had set off that morning to ascend Helvellyn but, after passing the chimney, the terrain became too challenging either to continue or turn back.

By the time Team members reached them it was dark and the party was very cold and wet. They were warmed in a shelter and provided with dry clothing and heat packs, then escorted safely over Helvellyn summit and down through Brown Cove. They were returned to Base in a Team Land Rover. The rescue involved 12 Team members and lasted 7 hours.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 19:35 on Saturday 13/11/2021 to assist a 56 year old man who had slipped whilst descending the ridge above Cauldale Bridge. He was a member of a party of 5 well equipped and experienced walkers who had been practicing night navigation skills on Cauldale Moor.

10 members of the team responded to the callout and ascended to the man’s location high on the ridge, just below the disused quarry. The casualty was assessed by a team doctor who diagnosed a possible ruptured tendon. His leg was splinted, he was given pain killers and packaged in a stretcher before being sledged and carried down to the road.

Other members of the casualty’s party retrieved their car from Hartsop, and the man was assisted into the vehicle for transport to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. The rescue involved 10 team members and took 3 hours.

At 14.42hrs on Wednesday 21st July the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was requested by Cumbria Police to assist a woman in her early sixties who had been walking on Gowbarrow above Ullswater and had got into difficulty trying to locate the way down to the main road.

On speaking to her team members found that she was not injured but very scared and stated that she could not move . A limited call out was initiated and four team members climbed up to the woman. She was put on a rope belay system and helped back off the ledge to safety and walked off the fell back to Aira Force. She was extremely grateful for the team’s assistance and explained she had tried to find the way down and realised she could not go down or up at the location she had ended up at.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called at about 18:45 on Monday 5th July to assist a couple from Harrow in Middlesex who had become stuck descending the fell above Deepdale Hall. Team members ascended to their location and walked the pair off the fell before returning them to their car.

The rescue took 2 hours and involved 17 team members.
