On 9th January Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were called by the Police to attend an incident on Helvellyn. A man was reported as having been blown from the ridge into Brown Cove.

On moving up the fell, the rescue team met up with the casualty’s companion who was able to provide further information about the incident. The casualty was located by a team search dog at the foot of the slope beneath the last reported position. The casualty was stretchered further down the valley and transferred to a RAF helicopter, from Anglesey. The helicopter was unable to get any closer due to wind conditions. Ground conditions were icy with a good covering of snow.

The casualty, who had tumbled approximately 300metres, was transferred to Barrow hospital where he was pronounced dead. The casualty, a 62 year old male was from Bolton, Lancs.
