Death of Chris Lewis, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team Member and Trustee

We are very sorry to share the sad news of the loss of Chris Lewis, a fabulous team member and friend to many. 

Chris Lewis, Trustee and former Team Member of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, died in Furness General Hospital during the morning of Monday 4 September.

Background
On the night of 6 February 2021, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out to provide assistance to a wild camper who was overnighting with a companion in the vicinity of Red Screes above Kirkstone Pass near Ambleside.

Chris, a member of the Team, fell 150 metres during the deployment and sustained life-changing injuries. After lengthy hospital treatment, Chris was able to return to his home near Hawkshead in the South Lakes, despite being confined to a wheelchair.

Chris continued to make a significant contribution to the Lake District’s Mountain Rescue community, in particular through his service as a Trustee for Patterdale Mountain Rescue where his charity leadership experience and expertise were highly valued.

Chris was admitted to hospital on Saturday 2 September with a chest infection and died during the morning of Monday 4 September of pneumonia.

Chris was just 62 and leaves a widow, Carol.
