Two simultaneous rescues at Patterdale

Hartsop and Kentmere Fells
On Wednesday 14th December Patterdale MRT were asked by the Kendal team to assist in locating two walkers who had become disorientated above Kentmere. It was thought that the man and woman, who had separated from their companions, may have descended to Hartsop via Hayeswater Dam. The missing walkers companions were located at Patterdale. The two missing people themselves were eventually found by the Kendal Team at Kentmere. Both were all safe and well but a bit shaken by their experience.

While the team was assembling for the first incident, they were called by the police to assist a fallen walker. The man from York, was descending Hellvellyn via Swirral Edge with a companion. The man slipped and fell ~200m into Brown Cove. The casualty and a passing walker who had come to the aid of the fallen walker were airlifted from the scene by a Sea King helicopter from Prestwick. Seventeen members of Patterdale rescue team were involved in the two incidents.

Patterdale Rescue team would like to stress the importance of carrying ice axes and crampons with the summits, edges and gullies now in winter conditions.
