One of the busiest Mountain Rescue Teams in England. 2016 our 52nd year

Responsibility Area

The Teams' area covers about 140 square km of the highest land in England, including Helvellyn, High Street, Fairfield, St Sunday Crag and the wild beauty of Dovedale and Deepdale as well as the quieter valleys and tops of Martindale and Riggindale to the east of Ullswater.

This area contains some of the great classic ridge walks and climbs of the Lake District and it attracts thousands of visitors every year. The Team has carried out more than 1000 rescues since it was established in 1964, averaging about 60 call outs every year. The majority of these mountain searches and rescues involve hill walkers or climbers, but paragliders, mountain bikers and runners all figure in our statistics – see our Incident Log for details of the most recent call outs.

The Team also plays its part in a variety of other situations where its members' skills and experience prove useful. The Team responds to local community needs when snow or floods hamper the ambulance service, it assists local farmers in animal rescues and it plays its part in the Lakes Emergency Plan (Ullswater) and Cumbria County Council’s General Emergency Plan for the area.
